Where next for telecoms growth?

The race to geographic growth is over, as telcos compete to become the most sensible, following the cross-sector trend of divestment.

Vodafone strives to placate shareholders by hiving off minority assets, and France Telecom gets stricter about underperforming assets.

With FDI, political uncertainty and market saturation hindering overseas investment, and sovereign debt crises triggering scares in Europe and the US, telcos remain focused on fixed/mobile convergence and in-country consolidation. With shareholders demanding a strong rationale for large-scale M&A, telcos are instead examining which assets and capabilities can be shared, as they come to grips with the high cost of LTE and fibre roll-outs.

Meanwhile, the window of opportunity for lending – which has boosted private equity activity as well as refinancing – is threatening to close as sovereign debt crises continue to rock the European and US economies.

Finally, TMT convergence has accelerated, as evidenced by Google’s US$12.5bn offer to buy Motorola Mobility and Microsoft’s US$8.5bn bid for Skype. Will telcos see this game changer as a further threat from internet companies, or are there partnership opportunities to be gained?
